Overcoming My Migraines

Migraines started to gradually take over my freedom & happiness a few years ago. As they became more severe and completely debilitated me (even to the point where I had to leave from work so I could recover), I knew I needed to take preventative measures in order to truly achieve autonomy from this disease that afflicts 38 million people in the US alone. Luckily for me, I found that solution and I want to share it with you!

A little backstory on my family: my grandfather, Dr. Hugh Riordan, co-founded what is now called the Riordan Clinic in Wichita, Kansas. His main principle was to focus on “biochemical individuality,” specifically by introducing mega doses of vitamins in order to get to the root of the problem. My grandfather truly emphasized the importance of Vitamin C, a nutrient that reduces inflammation, lowers blood pressure, and fights heart disease (along with many other benefits).

Because my mother suffered from migraines when she was younger, she started taking high dose Vitamin C because it reduced the inflammation that occurs when you have a migraine. After a few months, her migraines dissipated, allowing her to live a life free of pain. Because it worked for her, I started to take 2000-3000 mg of Solaray’s 1000 mg “Two Stage, Two Timed Release” Vitamin C capsules. I saw immediate improvement and have since been free of these severe headaches for over two months now! Even though this does not seem like a long time, it has bettered my quality of life and made me so much happier.

Even though this is not a solution for everyone, I firmly believe there is no harm in simply taking this supplement for a few weeks in order to assess your condition. Another preventative measure you can take is to keep a log of everything you eat & drink in a day because it may help you to pinpoint your triggers. For example, if I eat foods high in MSG (a sodium alternative), I end up with a migraine 12-16 hours later. Another trigger for me is fluctuating estrogen and progesterone levels during my menstrual cycle, something that is more difficult for me to prevent & control. However, by taking Vitamin C everyday, I am able to stop these triggers in their tracks and live freely!!
